Deer-Dragon Hybrid: Autumn

This is the first in a set of seasonal deer-dragon hybrids, and he represents autumn. He features long royal antlers, inlaid gold spots, and rhinestone feathered wings, all in colors inspired by fall. He has gently closed eyes and much longer legs than my standing dragons usually get, so he's pretty tall - nearly three inches including the antlers.

I actually started this guy last October, as a direct follow-up to Spirit of Earth: Deer Dragon. The antlers on this sculpture were originally meant for the Spirit of Earth, but they were too big and I ended up setting them aside for another sculpture. I found the antlers again last fall and decided to reprise the Spirit of Earth, only larger this time around so that the antlers fit the size of the sculpt. This guy was meant to be standing on three legs with the fourth upraised, but the pose warped in the oven and he slumped to the side, ending up on all fours after all. Turns out if you make really long legs and don't reinforce them with wire, they won't stay straight while baking. This was disappointing enough that I set him aside unfinished for several months.

I was inspired to do a set of deer-dragons for all four seasons a few weeks ago, so that's what prompted me to pull him out and finish him. He's not perfect, but I guess that means that I can try again sometime down the road. I tried photographing this set on a matte black background and I really like the results! It looks classy to me.
