Happy Raturday!

So.... I have pet rats, and I like taking pictures of them every now and then. I know I'm not a very good photographer, but I still thought it would be fun to share some of my better photos. This is a picture my very first two rats, Moby (American blue capped dumbo rex) and Starbuck (black bareback), very soon after I first got them. The size difference is pretty amazing, especially because they're only a week apart in age. Moby came from a pet store, and Starbuck was a shelter baby. This was taken when they were about 8-9 weeks old, during their initial introduction. They look like they're best friends, but in truth, they were more like roommates that put up with one another out of necessity. :giggle: They've both passed on at this point, but they were a wonderful introduction to pet rat ownership!

My dog would never hurt one, he's too innocent already.  He doesn't want to hurt anyone, but her wants to play with them.  He chased a fox off wanting to play with it, as well as a rabbit.

Just to know rats are dangerous.

Certainly it is not a good idea to come in contact with wild rodents of any sort, but domestic pet rats are no more dangerous than domestic pet dogs.

Awww - my first two rats were a female hooded rat named Zeke (short for Ezekiel) and Cheeto who was just a snake-food rescue.  He was a big brown rat...nothing fancy :)

Zeke would ride around my shoulder all the time - even if we went out and about.  People would always ask me about her, and even the owners of one of the local chinese food places let me bring her in when I was getting food, and they would always want to know where she was if I didn't have her with me :D

Rats rock!

I wish I had a rat that I could trust to carry around on my shoulder. Jimmy's pretty good, but he's also the world's busiest rat, so he gets bored quickly and wants to run off and do something else.

Zeke was also awesome that she would wait to potty until after she was off my shoulder :D

I'm hoping my son will want one as a pet when he's a bit older!

Such cuties! My first two rats were pet store "snake food" ones, so they didn't have the longest lives as they didn't have a very good start :( they loved each other but were complete opposites. The male, Teeka, was HUGE and lazy I took him with every where I could. Can't wait til my bf and I move out and we get them again. Such awesome pets and their popularity is really picking up. Back in school all they got were glares and "eewwww" :\

Awww, I love big rats! I've never had a really huge boy, but I keep hoping... My current boy is pretty small as far as males go, and Moby and Starbuck were more fat than large. x3
I never really thought about rats as pets until shortly before I got my first ones, but I've been pleasantly surprised by how generally accepted they are. I don't think I've run into anyone who's outright scorned them.

He was tiny when I got him, but I definitely want a big lazy boy again. My second pair were two high energy girls - and they used to argue so much!
Haha on second thoughts maybe Teeka was just fat rather O.o

A friend in high school had had one and I was wanting to get a hamster again and she suggested a rat rather. The beginning of the end that was - will never get a hamster again.

I must say most people are quite open to them as pets once you've described that a pet/fancy rat isn't just a wild rat that someone's caught. Although I did have an "incident" where I had taken Teeka with me to the post office and a little girl behind me absolutely loved him, her mom and she thought he was a chinchilla and when I corrected them they completely changed their minds and called the poor lil fella "gross" :(

I kept hamsters before I got into rats, and most of them were delightful, if rather unintelligent little critters. My mom had an evil one though, that left a scar on my arm. :<

That's so sad and silly. I'm surprised by how many stories I've heard of people who do an about-face when they realize the cute little rodent in front of them is actually a rat. I was asked if one of my rats was a gerbil once. She didn't seem put off when I corrected her, though. xD

It is silly indeed... but it was the one and only bad reaction mine have had. I've had many more people genuinely interested in them :) I've even got a friend so interested she has two of her own now.

Of course not! They were both very healthy until old age, were very sweet, and never bit. Pet rats are kind of like tiny dogs.
